They did not manage to beat the German team at the first leg in Abu Dhabi, UAE, last month, but this time, under the lights of the World Equestrian Centre in Ocala, USA, the Irish came out victorious in the second leg of the brand new Longines Nations League™. Faultless rounds from Darragh Kenny (Amsterdam 27), Daniel Coyle (Legacy), and Shane Sweetnam (Otis Blue) meant that the fourth rider, Cian O'Connor (Maurice), did not have to jump in the first round when the three best results of each team were added up. Tied with the United States and the Netherlands, who also had a zero-fault score going into the second round where only three riders competed and all scores were counted, the Irish won by adding just five faults; Kenny dropped a barrier this time, Coyle produced his second clean round of the day, and O'Connor sealed it with just one time fault while Sweetnam watched from the sidelines. Switzerland rose from seventh place after the first round to finish second with a total of eight faults, while the USA team stood on the third step of the podium with a final count of 12, just edging out the Dutch who also finished with 12 faults, but whose combined times were slower. Ireland has now moved to the top of the league standings ahead of the third of the four qualifying rounds which will take place in St. Gallen (SUI) on May 31.
